What is a kundli?

A kundli (also called janam kundli, janam patri or birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact minute and place you were born. It shows where the Sun, Moon, the five visible planets and the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu, were sitting against the twelve zodiac signs. Vedic astrology reads that map to describe your nature, the areas of life that come easy or need work, and the timing of big chapters.

What you need to make a kundli

• Date of birth. Sets the positions of slow planets like Jupiter and Saturn.
• Time of birth. The most sensitive input. The lagna moves about one sign every two hours, so even 10-15 minutes can shift a house. If you don't know it, we use 12:00 noon and tell you which parts are approximate.
• Place of birth. Gives latitude, longitude and the time zone in force on that date (we handle old offsets and daylight saving automatically).

How to read your kundli chart

The North Indian chart is the diamond-shaped one. The top middle diamond is always the 1st house (lagna), and houses run anti-clockwise from there. The small number in each house is the sign number (1 = Aries, 2 = Taurus and so on up to 12 = Pisces). In the South Indian style the signs are fixed in their boxes and the lagna box is marked instead. Both show the same chart, pick whichever you grew up with.

Start with three things: your lagna (how you meet the world, your body and overall direction), your Moon sign or rashi (your mind and emotions, used for daily horoscopes) and your Moon nakshatra (the lunar mansion that starts your dasha cycle and gives the first letter of your name in many families).

Planets, signs and nakshatras

Each planet stands for a set of things. The Sun is soul, father and authority. The Moon is mind and mother. Mars is drive and courage, Mercury is intellect and trade, Jupiter is wisdom and growth, Venus is love, comfort and art, Saturn is discipline and time. Rahu and Ketu are the shadow points that pull you toward new desires and away from old ones. A planet's sign tells you how it behaves, its house tells you where in life it shows up, and its nakshatra adds finer detail.

We also show the planet's dignity. Exalted means a planet is at its strongest, own sign means it is comfortable, debilitated means it has to work harder. Retrograde (R) planets look like they move backwards from Earth and often show themes you revisit.

Vimshottari dasha: the timing system

Vedic astrology is famous for timing, and that comes from the Vimshottari dasha. It's a 120-year cycle split into nine planetary periods (mahadashas) of different lengths, Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. The starting period depends on your Moon nakshatra at birth. Each mahadasha is split again into nine antardashas. Your kundli above marks the period you are in today, so you can see which planet is running your life right now and when the next shift comes.

Mangal dosha and navamsa

Mangal (Manglik) dosha is checked when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the lagna or the Moon. It's one of the most talked about points in kundli matching, and it is also one of the most often cancelled. Mars in its own sign, Jupiter's aspect and several other rules reduce or cancel it. The navamsa (D9) chart divides each sign into nine parts. It is read for marriage and for the real strength of planets. A planet in the same sign in both D1 and D9 is called vargottama and is considered strong.
