What palm reading actually looks at

Palm reading (palmistry, or hast rekha shastra in Indian tradition) is the old practice of reading character from the hand. A palm reading looks at four things together: the lines, the raised pads called mounts, the shape of the fingers and the overall shape of the palm. No single line tells the whole story. A strong heart line next to a faint head line says something different from the same heart line next to a deep, straight head line.

Mygrah's scanner follows the classic palmistry order. It first checks the photo is a clear palm, then reads the hand shape, traces the four major lines, looks for the minor lines that are visible, rates each mount and finally writes a reading that ties it all to the area of life you picked.

The four major lines

Heart line

The top horizontal line, starting under the little finger and running toward the index or middle finger. It's read for emotional style. A long line that curves up toward the index finger usually points to someone warm and expressive in love. A straight, shorter line suggests a more private person who shows feelings through actions instead of words. Small branches are often read as close friendships or meaningful relationships.

Head line

Just below the heart line, starting between the thumb and index finger. It shows how you think and decide. A straight head line is linked with practical, logical thinking. A line that slopes down toward the wrist is linked with imagination and creative work. A deep line means focus, a lighter one means a mind that likes to jump between ideas.

Life line

The curved line that wraps around the base of the thumb. It's the most misunderstood line. Its length has nothing to do with how long you live. Palmistry reads it for energy, enthusiasm and how you handle big life changes. A wide curve out into the palm is read as a lot of drive, a line that stays close to the thumb as someone who saves their energy for the people and things that matter most.

Fate line

A vertical line running up the middle of the palm toward the middle finger. Not everyone has a clear one, and that's normal. It's read for career direction and how much your path is shaped by your own choices. A fate line that starts from the life line is often linked with early family influence, one that starts from the outer edge with support from friends or the public.

Minor lines worth knowing

  • Sun line (Apollo line): a short vertical line under the ring finger, read for recognition, creativity and satisfaction in what you do.
  • Mercury line: runs toward the little finger. Read for communication, business sense and day to day energy.
  • Relationship lines: small horizontal marks on the edge of the palm below the little finger, read for important bonds.
  • Girdle of Venus: a small arc above the heart line, linked with sensitivity and strong feelings.
  • Travel lines: short lines on the outer edge near the wrist, read for a love of movement and new places.

The mounts of the palm

Mounts are the soft raised areas at the base of each finger and around the edges of the palm. Each one is named after a planet, which is where palmistry and astrology meet. A full, well-padded mount means that quality is strong in you, a flat one means it's quieter.

  • Jupiter (under the index finger): ambition, leadership, self-belief.
  • Saturn (under the middle finger): responsibility, patience, seriousness.
  • Sun / Apollo (under the ring finger): creativity, charm, love of beauty.
  • Mercury (under the little finger): communication, wit, business sense.
  • Venus (base of the thumb): warmth, affection, love of life.
  • Moon / Luna (lower outer edge): imagination, intuition, dreams.
  • Mars (the middle and both sides of the palm): courage, drive and self-control.

Hand shapes and the four elements

Western palmistry groups hands into four elements, based on the shape of the palm and the length of the fingers. Your hand shape is the base layer of any reading.

Hand typePalm and fingersUsual traits
EarthSquare palm, short fingersPractical, steady, reliable, likes working with the hands
AirSquare palm, long fingersCurious, social, good with words and ideas
FireLong palm, short fingersEnergetic, bold, quick to act, natural leader
WaterLong palm, long fingersSensitive, intuitive, creative, emotionally deep

Finger shapes and the thumb

Fingers add detail. Pointed fingertips are linked with idealism and artistic taste, square tips with order and method, spatulate (wide) tips with action and invention. Long fingers point to patience with detail, short fingers to a big-picture thinker. The thumb matters a lot in Indian palmistry: a long, firm thumb is read as strong willpower, a flexible thumb that bends back easily as someone adaptable and generous.

Left hand or right hand?

Palmistry looks at both hands, but they mean different things. The non-dominant hand is read as what you were born with, your natural potential. The dominant hand (the one you write with) is read as what you've done with it so far and where you're heading. That's why the scanner asks which hand you use most and asks you to photograph that one. Traditional Indian palmistry often reads the right hand for men and the left for women, but the modern approach is to go with the dominant hand.

How to get a clear palm photo

Good light makes the biggest difference. Stand near a window or under a bright light, open your hand flat with fingers slightly apart, and hold the phone about 25 to 30 cm away so the whole palm and the base of the fingers fit in the frame. Avoid strong shadows and don't use a filter. If the scanner can't see the lines clearly it'll ask you to retake, which is better than reading a blurry guess.

How to use your reading

Treat a palm reading as a mirror, not a verdict. It's good for reflection: noticing your patterns in love, the way you make decisions, where your energy goes. Lines also change slowly over the years, so it's worth scanning again later. If you want to go deeper, combine it with your kundli or your future prediction, since your birth chart and your hand often tell the same story from two angles.

What people say about their palm reading

“I did it mostly for fun but the head line part was spot on. It said I overthink decisions and then go with my gut anyway. That's literally me.”

Sneha · Pune

“Liked that it asked which hand I use. The career section matched what my nani used to say when she looked at my hand.”

Arjun · Lucknow

“Took two tries because my kitchen light was bad, it told me to retake instead of making something up. The love reading was really sweet.”

Maya · Toronto

Palm reading FAQ

Is this palm reading really free?+

Yes. The scan and the reading of your four major lines are free with a free account. A longer full report (mounts, fingers, love, career, money, wellbeing and life path) can be unlocked if you want more detail.

Which hand should I scan?+

Scan your dominant hand, the one you write with. In palmistry it shows how your life is turning out and where it's heading. Your other hand shows your natural potential.

How does the palm scanner work?+

You take or upload a photo of your open palm. Our AI checks the photo is clear, finds the major lines, mounts and finger shapes, and writes a reading based on classic Indian and western palmistry.

Is my palm photo saved?+

No. The photo is only used to create your reading and is deleted right after. We save the text of your reading to your account, not the image.

How accurate is palm reading?+

Palmistry is a traditional practice, not a science. Read it as a tool for self-reflection. Many people find the personality parts very relatable, but it can't predict exact events.

Does a short life line mean a short life?+

No. This is the most common myth. The life line is read for energy, enthusiasm and how you handle change, not for how long you'll live.

Do palm lines change over time?+

Yes, slowly. The minor lines change the most. Many people scan again after a year or after a big life change and compare.

Can I read my palm in Hindi?+

Yes. Switch the site to Hindi and your whole reading comes back in Hindi.
