Lagna (Ascendant) Calculator

What is lagna?

Lagna, or the ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place of your birth. As the Earth turns, a new sign rises about every two hours, so the lagna is the most personal part of a chart. Twins born 20 minutes apart can have different lagnas.

In Vedic astrology the lagna is your 1st house. It describes your body, temperament, how others see you and the overall direction of your life. Every other house is counted from it, so if the lagna changes, every house in the chart changes too.

Lagna lord

The planet that rules your lagna sign is called the lagna lord (lagnesh). Where it sits in your chart, and how strong it is, says a lot about where your energy naturally goes. A lagna lord in the 10th house often points to a career focus, in the 7th to partnerships, in the 9th to learning and travel.

Why birth time matters so much

Because the lagna moves about 1 degree every 4 minutes, a wrong birth time is the most common reason charts don't feel right. If your lagna degree is very early (0-2°) or very late (28-30°), a few minutes either way could change the sign. Hospital records or a family note are worth checking.

Lagna vs Moon sign vs Sun sign

Lagna is your body and life path, the Moon sign is your mind, the Sun sign is your soul and sense of self. Vedic astrology reads all three, but houses and timing always start from the lagna.
