Shani Sade Sati Calculator

Check if Saturn's 7.5-year Sade Sati is running for you, which phase you're in, and the real start and end dates of all your cycles. Calculated from Saturn's actual movement, not a fixed table.

Birth time is optional here. Add it if you know it, the result gets more exact.

How to read your result

  • In Sade Sati or not. You're in Sade Sati when Saturn is in the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign, or the sign after it.
  • Phase. Rising (Saturn in the 12th from your Moon), peak (on your Moon sign) and setting (2nd from your Moon). Each lasts about two and a half years.
  • Cycles. Most people go through Sade Sati two or three times in a life, roughly every 30 years. We list each one with its dates.
  • Saturn's exact moves. When Saturn goes retrograde it can step back a sign for a few months. Those moves are listed under each cycle, but they count as one Sade Sati.
  • Dhaiya. Saturn in the 4th (Kantaka) or 8th (Ashtama) from your Moon. A shorter 2.5-year period, shown separately.

What is Shani Sade Sati?

Sade Sati means "seven and a half". It's the period when Saturn (Shani) moves through three signs in a row: the sign just before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign right after it. Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross one sign, so three signs come to roughly seven and a half years.

In Vedic astrology the Moon is the mind. Saturn is the slow planet of discipline, time and karma. When Saturn sits over and around the Moon, people usually feel more pressure, more responsibility and a need to slow down and get serious. That's the whole reason Sade Sati gets so much attention in India.

The three phases

PhaseSaturn is inUsual themes
Rising (1st)12th from MoonExpenses go up, sleep and rest suffer, old things end, travel or moves
Peak (2nd)Moon signMental pressure, health habits, close relationships, the biggest lessons
Setting (3rd)2nd from MoonFamily, savings and speech, the pressure slowly lifts

The peak phase is usually the heaviest. The setting phase often feels like getting your breath back, though money and family still need attention.

How this calculator works

Many websites use a fixed table of years. We don't. We find your natal Moon sign with the Lahiri ayanamsa, then follow Saturn's real sidereal position day by day for about a hundred years from your birth. Every time Saturn changes sign we find the exact date. That gives true start and end dates, including the months when Saturn turns retrograde and slips back into the previous sign.

A short retrograde step back doesn't end Sade Sati. If Saturn leaves the three signs and comes back within a few months, we treat it as one cycle and show the individual moves inside it, so you can see exactly what happened when.

Do I need my birth time?

Usually no. Sade Sati depends only on your Moon sign, and the Moon stays in one sign for about two and a half days. On most dates the birth date alone is enough. If the Moon changed sign on your birth date and you leave the time out, we tell you, because then your Moon sign could be either of two signs.

Is Sade Sati always bad?

No. It has a scary reputation, but plenty of people get married, build careers or buy homes during Sade Sati. Saturn rewards steady work and honesty, and punishes shortcuts. How it feels for you depends a lot on your own chart:

  • For Taurus, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius lagnas, Saturn is a friendly or ruling planet and Sade Sati is often milder.
  • If natal Saturn is strong (own sign or exalted), the period tends to bring structure more than stress.
  • The dasha you're running matters as much as the transit. A good dasha softens a hard transit.

Sade Sati vs dhaiya (small panoti)

When Saturn moves through the 4th sign from your Moon it's called Kantaka Shani or Ardhashtama, and through the 8th it's Ashtama Shani. Each lasts about two and a half years and is called dhaiya or small panoti. It's lighter than Sade Sati but touches home and peace of mind (4th) or sudden changes and health habits (8th). The calculator lists these dates too.

What people traditionally do during Sade Sati

  • Keep a steady routine: regular sleep, honest work, simple food.
  • Help elders, workers and people in need. Service is the classic Saturn remedy.
  • On Saturdays, light a sesame oil lamp, recite the Hanuman Chalisa or the Shani mantra "Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah".
  • Avoid big risky bets, especially in the peak phase. Slow and planned works better.

Gemstones like blue sapphire are strong and not for everyone, so don't wear one just because Sade Sati started. Check how Saturn sits in your full chart first.

The classical rule

The rule used here comes from the gochar (transit) chapters of classical texts such as Phaladeepika, which read Saturn's transit through the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the natal Moon as the hardest Saturn period, and the 4th and 8th as the next ones to watch. All signs are sidereal (Lahiri), the same as an Indian panchang.
