Kaal Sarp Dosha Calculator

Check if your chart has Kaal Sarp dosha: all seven planets on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis. You get a clear present, partial or absent answer, the type name and the houses involved.

How to read your result

  • Present. All seven planets (Sun to Saturn) fall in one half of the zodiac between Rahu and Ketu, by exact degree.
  • Partial. One planet breaks out of the axis, or a planet shares a sign with Rahu or Ketu but sits on the other side by degree. Most traditions call this mild or ardh Kaal Sarp.
  • Kaal Sarp vs Kaal Amrit. If planets run from Rahu towards Ketu in zodiac order it's Kaal Sarp. If they run from Ketu towards Rahu, many traditions call it Kaal Amrit, a gentler form.
  • Type. The name comes from the house Rahu occupies from your lagna, from Anant (1st) to Sheshnag (12th).

What is Kaal Sarp dosha?

Kaal Sarp means "serpent of time". Rahu is seen as the head of a snake and Ketu as its tail. They are always exactly opposite each other. When all seven visible planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn) sit on one side of that line, the chart is said to be hemmed in by the snake. That's Kaal Sarp dosha.

People with this pattern often say life moves in bursts: long stretches of effort with little to show, then sudden jumps. Traditionally it's linked to delays, a restless mind and results that come later than expected. It's also linked to unusual drive. Plenty of very successful people have it.

Where the idea comes from

Kaal Sarp isn't described in Parashara's Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It grew out of later texts on Rahu and Ketu and became popular through practice in the last century or so. That's one reason different websites give different answers for the same chart. We follow the most common rule and tell you exactly how we apply it, so you can compare.

How we check it

We take Rahu's sidereal longitude (mean node) and measure how far each planet is from it, going forward in the zodiac. If every planet is less than 180° ahead of Rahu, they're all in the Rahu to Ketu half. If every planet is more than 180° ahead, they're all in the Ketu to Rahu half. Either way the yoga forms. If one planet is out, or a planet is in the same sign as a node but on the wrong side by degree, we call it partial.

Does it need a birth time?

For the yes or no part, mostly not. Rahu and the slow planets don't move much in a day. The Moon does, so on some dates the answer can flip with the time. The type name needs the lagna, and the lagna needs an exact time. Without a time we use 12:00 and the house-based type may be off.

Things that soften Kaal Sarp

  • A planet conjunct Rahu or Ketu in the same sign but on the other side by degree (that's why we show "partial").
  • Strong Jupiter, or a lagna lord in a kendra or trikona.
  • Good yogas elsewhere in the chart, such as raj yogas.
  • Age. Many traditions say the effect eases after the Rahu and Ketu dashas or after the early forties.

Remedies people follow

The best known is the Kaal Sarp puja at Trimbakeshwar near Nashik. Others include chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra, worship of Lord Shiva on Mondays and on Nag Panchami, and keeping Rahu themes in check: avoid shortcuts, keep your word, stay away from intoxicants. None of these are compulsory. Treat the dosha as one factor in a whole chart, not a verdict.

Questions people ask

How common is Kaal Sarp dosha?+

The full form shows up in a small share of charts, roughly one in ten or fewer. Partial forms are more common.

Is Kaal Sarp dosha mentioned in old scriptures?+

It isn't in BPHS. The idea comes from later texts and practice, which is why rules differ between websites.

What is Kaal Amrit yoga?+

When all planets run from Ketu towards Rahu instead of from Rahu towards Ketu. Many consider it a milder, more positive form.

Do I need an exact birth time?+

For the present / absent answer, usually not. For the type name (which depends on the house Rahu is in), yes.

Can Kaal Sarp dosha be cancelled?+

It's often softened: a planet breaking out of the axis, a strong Jupiter or strong lagna lord, or good yogas in the chart.

Does Kaal Sarp affect marriage?+

Mostly when Rahu or Ketu is in the 1st or 7th house (Anant or Takshak). Even then, the 7th house, Venus and the navamsa matter more.
