What is Mangal dosha?

Mangal dosha (also called Kuja dosha or being Manglik) is a chart condition where Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Mars is a hot, assertive planet, and in these houses it's said to bring friction into marriage and family life. It's checked mainly during kundli matching.

From lagna and from Moon

Most traditions check Mars from the lagna and again from the Moon sign (some also from Venus). If Mars falls in a dosha house from only one of these, the dosha is usually treated as mild. If it falls in a dosha house from both, it's taken more seriously.

Cancellation rules

Mangal dosha is cancelled in a lot of charts. Common rules include:

• Mars in its own signs (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn).
• Jupiter sitting with Mars or aspecting it.
• Mars together with the Moon.
• House-specific exceptions, for example Mars in the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo, in the 4th in Aries or Scorpio, in the 7th in Cancer or Capricorn, in the 8th in Sagittarius or Pisces, in the 12th in Taurus or Libra.
• Both partners having Mangal dosha, which is the most common solution in matching.

Many families also follow the view that the effect softens after age 28.

Should you worry?
