Moon Sign (Rashi) Calculator

Find your Vedic Moon sign in a second. In Indian astrology your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, and it's the sign used for your daily horoscope.

What is a Moon sign?

Your Moon sign, or rashi, is the zodiac sign the Moon was passing through at the moment you were born. The Moon moves fast, it changes sign roughly every two and a half days, so two people born a week apart often have different Moon signs even if their Sun sign is the same.

In Vedic astrology the Moon stands for the mind (manas), feelings, memory and your mother. That's why Indian astrology leans on the Moon sign more than the Sun sign: it describes how you react, what makes you feel safe and how you handle stress.

Moon sign vs Sun sign

Western horoscopes in magazines use the Sun sign. Indian horoscopes (rashifal) use the Moon sign. They are also calculated on different zodiacs. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which today sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical one, so many people find their Vedic signs are one sign "back" from what they expected.

How we calculate it

We convert your local birth time to UTC using the time zone that applied on that date, work out the Moon's exact position with an astronomy engine and subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. If your birth time is unknown, the result is still right most of the time, but if the Moon was close to changing signs that day, the exact time matters.

Using your rashi

  • Read the daily, weekly and yearly rashifal for your Moon sign.
  • Check Sade Sati: it runs while Saturn transits the signs around your Moon sign.
  • In kundli matching (guna milan), Moon signs and nakshatras of both partners are compared.

Questions people ask

Is rashi the same as Moon sign?+

Yes. In Vedic astrology rashi usually means your Moon sign, the sign the Moon occupied at your birth.

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?+

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. Many placements shift back by one sign.

Do I need my birth time?+

It helps. The Moon changes sign about every 2.5 days, so on most days the date alone is enough, but on a sign change day the time decides it.

Which horoscope should I read?+

For Indian rashifal, read the one for your Moon sign. Many people also check the one for their lagna.

What is Sade Sati?+

The roughly 7.5-year period when Saturn moves through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign and the sign after it.
