Sun Sign Calculator

Find your Sun sign the Vedic way and the Western way in one go. You'll see the sidereal sign used in Indian astrology, the tropical sign from magazine horoscopes, the exact degree and the Sun's nakshatra.

Birth time is optional here. Add it if you know it, the result gets more exact.

How to read your result

  • Vedic sign is the sidereal sign used in Indian astrology, with degree and nakshatra.
  • Western sign is the tropical sign you see in English horoscopes.
  • House shows the area of life where Sun works. It needs a birth time.
  • Dignity: if Sun is exalted, debilitated or in its own sign, we show it.

What your Sun sign says

The Sun is the atmakaraka by nature in Vedic astrology: the soul, the father, authority, confidence and health. Its sign shows how you want to be seen and what makes you feel proud of yourself. Its house shows the area of life where you want to stand out.

Vedic vs Western Sun sign

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. The gap between them is the ayanamsa, about 24 degrees today. That's why many people find their Vedic Sun sign is one sign before their Western one. We show both so you can compare.

How long Sun stays in a sign

The Sun spends about a month in each sign, so the date alone almost always gives the right Sun sign. Only on the day the Sun changes sign (around the 14th to 16th of each month in the Vedic zodiac, the 19th to 23rd in the Western one) does the time matter.

Your Sun sign in its dasha

The sign and house shown here matter most when Sun's mahadasha or antardasha runs. In those years Sun brings its house topics forward and acts in the style of its sign. Look at where the sign lord sits as well, since Sun delivers its results through that planet. When a slow planet transits your natal Sun sign, the same themes tend to come up again.

How we calculate it

We convert your birth time to UTC using the time zone that applied on that date, compute Sun's exact position with an astronomy engine and subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa. Houses are whole signs counted from your lagna. If you leave the time out and Sun changed sign that day, we tell you.
