What is the navamsa chart?

Navamsa means "ninth part". The D9 chart divides each 30-degree sign into nine parts of 3°20' and maps each part to a sign. So every planet gets a second sign, its navamsa sign. The chart built from those signs is the navamsa, or D9.

If the birth chart (D1) is the tree, the navamsa is often called the fruit. It shows what a planet actually delivers over a lifetime, especially in the second half of life.

What it's used for

• Marriage and spouse. The D9 lagna, its 7th house and Venus are read for the nature of the partner and married life.
• Planet strength. A planet that is weak in D1 but strong in D9 improves with time, and the other way round.
• Vargottama. A planet in the same sign in D1 and D9 is vargottama and is considered strong and steady.
• Dharma. The D9 also describes values and spiritual direction.

How the navamsa is calculated

For fire signs the nine parts start from Aries, for earth signs from Capricorn, for air signs from Libra and for water signs from Cancer. In practice that means the navamsa sign is simply the planet's longitude divided into 3°20' steps counted from 0° Aries. We compute it from sidereal (Lahiri) positions.

Birth time and the D9 lagna

The navamsa lagna changes about every 13 minutes, so it needs a precise birth time. Planet navamsa signs (apart from the Moon) are much more stable.
