What is kundli matching?

Kundli matching, also called Kundli Milan, Guna Milan or horoscope matching, is the Vedic way of checking how well two people fit for marriage. It compares the two birth charts, mostly the Moon of each person, because the Moon stands for the mind, feelings and day to day temperament. In most of North India families use the Ashtakoota system, which scores the match on eight points (kootas) and gives a total out of 36 gunas.

The weights go up as you go down the list, so Bhakoot and Nadi alone carry 15 of the 36 points. That's why a match can look fine on most kootas and still score low if one of these two is zero.

Doshas in kundli matching

Nadi dosha

Every nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis: Adi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) or Antya (Kapha). When both people share the same nadi, Nadi koota gets 0 of 8 points and this is called Nadi dosha. Traditionally it's linked to health and children. It is cancelled when both Moons are in the same sign but different nakshatras, when the nakshatra is the same but the signs differ, or when the two Moon sign lords are the same planet. Same nakshatra with a different pada reduces it.

Bhakoot dosha

Bhakoot looks at how far apart the two Moon signs are. The 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 placements score 0 and count as Bhakoot dosha, linked to money worries, distance or family friction. It is cancelled when the two sign lords are the same planet or natural friends, or when the navamsa lords of both Moons are friendly.

Gana dosha

A Deva person with a Rakshasa person (and in some tables Manushya with Rakshasa) scores very low on Gana. It points to different temperaments. Friendly Moon sign lords or a clean Bhakoot are the usual cancellation.

Mangal dosha

Mangal (Manglik) dosha is not part of the 36 points but every family checks it. Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the lagna or the Moon makes a chart Manglik. When both partners are Manglik the dosha cancels out, which is the most common remedy in matching. Mars in its own or exalted sign, Jupiter's aspect and a few sign rules also cancel it inside one chart, and we show which rule applies for each person.

What is a good guna milan score?

The score is a starting point, not the full answer. A 30 with a live Nadi dosha can be weaker than a 22 with every dosha cancelled. Look at the koota table and the dosha cards together, then the 7th house, Venus and the dasha periods of both charts, which is what our paid compatibility report covers.

Kundli matching without birth time

Guna Milan only needs the Moon, and the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so you can match without an exact birth time. We use 12:00 noon when you tick "I don't know my birth time". The catch is that the Moon can change nakshatra (roughly once a day) or even sign (every two and a half days) during that day. If that happens for either person we tell you on the result, so you know the score could change. The lagna and Mangal dosha from lagna also need a real birth time to be reliable.

Kundli matching by name

Some people match by the first letter of the name, which gives a guessed nakshatra. It's a rough shortcut. Matching by date, time and place of birth gives the real Moon position and is far more accurate, and it's what this tool does. If you just want a fun name-based check, try our love calculator.
