Vedic vs Western sign: what's your real sign?

Most apps (Co-Star, CHANI, magazine horoscopes) use the Western zodiac. Vedic astrology uses a different zodiac that's about 24° behind, so a lot of people turn out to be the sign before. See both in 10 seconds.

Vedic sun sign dates

Approximate dates the sun enters each sidereal sign (sankranti). They can move by a day from year to year.

Why is my Vedic sign different?

Both systems split the sky into the same 12 signs, but they start counting from a different place. Western astrology ties Aries to the spring equinox, the day in March when day and night are equal. That's the tropical zodiac, and it follows the seasons.

Vedic astrology (Jyotish) ties the signs to the actual stars behind the sun. That's the sidereal zodiac. Because the Earth wobbles slowly on its axis, the equinox point drifts backwards against the stars by about 1° every 72 years. After roughly 2,000 years the gap is now about 24°. That gap is called the ayanamsa.

24° is most of a sign (each sign is 30°). So if your sun was in the first 24° of a Western sign, it lands in the sign before in Vedic astrology. That's why so many Leos find out they're Cancer and so many Aries turn out to be Pisces.

Which one is right?

Neither is a mistake. They measure different things. The Western zodiac is about the seasons and the Vedic zodiac is about the stars. Western astrology leans on the sun sign and psychology. Vedic astrology leans on the moon sign, your birth star (nakshatra) and timing systems like dasha, which say what's active in your life and when.

If your Western sign never felt quite right, read your Vedic moon sign and nakshatra. A lot of people find those fit better.

Moon sign vs sun sign

In India "what's your rashi?" means your moon sign, not your sun sign. Your moon sign is used for daily rashifal, kundli matching for marriage and naming a baby. The moon moves through a sign in about 2.5 days, so it needs your birth date and ideally the time too.

Questions

Is my Vedic sign always one sign before my Western sign?+

Usually, not always. If you were born in roughly the last 6 days of a Western sign, your sun stays in the same sign in Vedic astrology. The tool checks your exact birth moment.

Which ayanamsa do you use?+

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the official one used by the Indian government's calendar and most Vedic astrologers. It's about 24.2° in 2026.

Do I need my birth time?+

For your sun sign, the date is usually enough. For your moon sign it helps, and for your ascendant (lagna) you need it. Tick 'I don't know my birth time' if you don't have it and we'll use noon.

Does this change my horoscope?+

If you read Western horoscopes, keep using your Western sign. If you read Vedic rashifal, use your Vedic moon sign. Mixing the two is where the confusion comes from.
