How zodiac compatibility works

Zodiac compatibility looks at how two sun signs get along. It's the most popular kind of astrology match because everyone knows their sign. It's not as detailed as comparing two full birth charts, but the sun sign says a lot about someone's basic energy, and some pairings really do tend to feel easier than others.

Our scores come from four classic rules that astrologers have used for centuries. Every pair page combines them with notes written for that specific pair.

1. The four elements

Each sign belongs to one of four elements:

Signs of the same element understand each other easily. Fire and air feed each other (air fans the flame), and earth and water support each other (water feeds the soil). Fire with water, or earth with air, can work, but the two people experience the world quite differently.

2. Modality: cardinal, fixed and mutable

Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) like to start things. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) like to keep things steady. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) like to adapt. Two cardinal signs can compete for the lead. Two fixed signs can both dig in their heels. A mix often balances out.

3. The distance between signs

Count from one sign to the other around the zodiac wheel and you get one of seven angles. Each has a classic meaning:

• Same sign: instant understanding, sometimes too much of the same.
• Next-door signs: very different energy, it takes learning.
• Two apart (sextile): friendly and easy, a good team.
• Three apart (square): tension and attraction, growth through friction.
• Four apart (trine): the classic best match, same element, natural flow.
• Five apart: an odd pairing that needs adjusting.
• Opposite signs: magnetic, they complete each other but can pull apart.

4. Ruling planets

Every sign has a ruling planet: Mars for Aries, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo, Pluto and Mars for Scorpio, Jupiter for Sagittarius, Saturn for Capricorn, Uranus and Saturn for Aquarius, and Neptune and Jupiter for Pisces. Ruling planets add colour to how two people love and talk.

What the scores mean

Each pair gets an overall score and five category scores: love, intimacy, friendship, communication and trust. Above 80 is a great match, 65 to 80 is good, 50 to 65 is mixed, and below 50 is a challenging match. A challenging match is not a bad one. It means you'll need to understand each other on purpose instead of by default, and those couples often grow the most.

How to use your result

Read the strengths first, then the challenges, then the tips. The strengths tell you what comes naturally, so lean on them when things get busy. The challenges are where small misunderstandings start, so it helps to name them early, maybe with a laugh. If you know your partner's Moon or Venus sign too, check those matches as well, because they often explain the parts a sun sign can't.

Sun sign vs Moon sign

The signs here are Western sun signs, based on your birth date. Indian (Vedic) astrology puts more weight on the Moon sign (rashi) and uses a sidereal zodiac, which is shifted by about 24 degrees.
