Nakshatra Compatibility

Pick two birth stars and see the Ashtakoota guna score out of 36, with every koota explained. All 378 nakshatra pairs have their own page.

How nakshatra matching works

In Vedic astrology, marriage matching starts from the Moon. The nakshatra (birth star) the Moon was in when you were born, and the rashi that nakshatra falls in, decide most of the classic Ashtakoota score. That's why two people who only know their nakshatras can already get a good idea of their guna milan.

The eight kootas add up to 36 points: Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8). Traditional guidance reads 18 or more as acceptable, 25 or more as good, and 33 or more as excellent.

Why the pada can change the score

Nine nakshatras cross from one rashi into the next: Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada. For these, the rashi depends on the pada (quarter), and Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot all use the rashi. Each pair page shows the main score using the pada in the majority rashi and the full range across all padas.

Boy and girl order

A few kootas are read in one direction (the boy's row against the girl's column), so swapping the two can change the total slightly. Each page shows both orders.

What this doesn't cover

A nakshatra-only match skips Mangal dosha and the rest of the chart. For a proper check, use kundli matching with both birth dates, times and places.

Questions people ask

Which nakshatras are most compatible?+

There's no single best pair. Scores depend on all eight kootas. Look for 25 or more gunas and no uncancelled Nadi or Bhakoot dosha.

What is Nadi dosha?+

When both people have the same nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya), Nadi koota scores 0 of 8. Classical texts treat it as serious, but several cancellation rules exist.

Is a same-nakshatra marriage okay?+

Same nakshatra usually means same nadi. Some texts allow it when the padas differ or the rashis differ. A full kundli check gives the answer.

How many gunas are needed for marriage?+

18 out of 36 is the traditional minimum. 25 or more is considered good.

Does order matter?+

Slightly. Varna, Vashya and Gana are read from the boy's side, so each page shows both orders.

Is this enough to decide a marriage?+

No. It's a quick nakshatra-level check. Full kundli matching adds Mangal dosha and the rest of both charts.
