What is name compatibility?

Name compatibility is a numerology way of checking how two people fit together, using only their names. In numerology every letter carries a number. Add those numbers up and you get a few key numbers for each person. Compare those numbers between two people and you get a picture of where you naturally agree and where you'll need a bit more effort.

It's lighter than a full birth chart match, and you don't need anyone's birth time. That's why it's popular for crushes, new relationships and even friendships or business partners.

The Chaldean system we use

There are two common letter systems in numerology: Pythagorean and Chaldean. We use Chaldean, which is the older system and the one most Indian numerologists prefer. In Chaldean numerology the letters get values from 1 to 8 (9 is treated as sacred and not given to any letter):

The three numbers

Destiny number

Add the values of every letter and keep adding the digits until you get a single number from 1 to 9. This is the destiny or expression number. It shows the direction you're heading in life, your goals and how you get things done. It carries the most weight in our score, about half.

Soul urge number

Do the same with only the vowels (A, E, I, O, U). This shows your inner wishes: what kind of love, home and life feels right to you. It counts for about a third of the score.

Personality number

Now use only the consonants. This is the side of you that people meet first: your style, your manner and your first impression. It counts for the rest.

How the harmony is decided

In Indian numerology each number from 1 to 9 is ruled by a planet: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars. Vedic astrology has a well-known table of which planets are natural friends, neutral or enemies. We use that table to compare each pair of numbers:

• Same number: you think alike in that area. Very easy, sometimes too similar.
• Friendly: both planets are friends. This area of your relationship flows.
• Mostly friendly or neutral: it works, with some give and take.
• Needs effort: the planets don't naturally get along, so this is where you'll talk things through more.

The three results are weighted (destiny counts most), and the final score is shown out of 100 along with three short notes.

What a low score means

Not much, honestly. A name score is a fun lens, not a verdict. Plenty of happy couples have "tense" destiny numbers. If anything, a lower score tells you which part of the relationship to be patient with. Many people use name numerology the other way round too: to pick a spelling or a nickname that feels more balanced.

A quick example

Take "Rahul" and "Priya". Rahul's destiny number is 8 (Saturn) and Priya's is 4 (Rahu). In Vedic astrology Saturn and Rahu are friends, so their life goals support each other. Their soul numbers are 7 (Ketu) and 2 (Moon), which get along fairly well, and their personality numbers are 1 (Sun) and 2 (Moon), both friendly. Put together, that's a high name harmony.
