What is Abhijit muhurat?

The day is split into 15 muhurtas from sunrise to sunset. The 8th one, sitting right around local noon, is Abhijit. It's about 48 minutes long and is believed to remove many faults of a day, so it's a common fallback when no other muhurat is free. It's tied to Lord Vishnu and the Sudarshana chakra in the old stories.

Two things to check. Many traditions don't take Abhijit on Wednesday. And on some days Rahu kaal or Yamaganda overlaps it. This page shows both. Local noon here means the middle point between sunrise and sunset in your city, which is usually not 12:00 on the clock.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Abhijit not taken on Wednesday?+

Classical muhurat texts list Wednesday as an exception, so many panchangs show 'none' for Abhijit on Wednesdays.

Can Abhijit be used for a wedding?+

It's used for many good starts. For a wedding, families usually look for a full vivah muhurat that also checks nakshatra and tithi.

Is Abhijit always at 12 noon?+

No. It's centred on local noon, the midpoint of sunrise and sunset, which can be 11:50 or 12:40 on the clock depending on your city and season.
