What are Amrit kaal and Varjyam?

Both come from the nakshatra the Moon is in. Each nakshatra has a fixed point, counted in ghatis from its start, where a 4 ghati window begins. One window is Varjyam (also called Tyajyam), which is avoided for good work. Another is Amrit kaal, which is seen as very good. Since nakshatras don't last exactly 60 ghatis, the window is scaled to the nakshatra's real length, so it's usually 80 to 100 minutes.

Varjyam is checked a lot in South Indian panchangams. Amrit kaal is a nice bonus when it falls in daytime. Some days have two windows, some have none, because a nakshatra can start and end outside the sunrise to sunrise day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amrit kaal the same every day?+

No. It moves with the nakshatra, so it can be morning one day and late night the next.

What should I avoid in Varjyam?+

Starting new work, travel and auspicious rituals. It's treated a bit like Rahu kaal.

Why are there two Amrit kaal windows today?+

When two nakshatras both fall inside one sunrise to sunrise day, each one can give its own window.
