What is a karana?

A karana is half a tithi, the time the Moon takes to gain 6 degrees on the Sun. A month has 60 of them. Seven karanas repeat eight times through the month (Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, Vishti) and four come once, around Amavasya (Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna). Vishti is better known as Bhadra. Good work, especially Raksha Bandhan and Holika Dahan, is not done during Bhadra.
