What is a tithi?

A tithi is a lunar day: the time the Moon takes to move 12 degrees ahead of the Sun. Thirty tithis make a lunar month, 15 in Shukla paksha (waxing) and 15 in Krishna paksha (waning). Since the Moon's speed changes, a tithi can be as short as about 19 hours or as long as 26. Sometimes a tithi starts and ends between two sunrises and is "lost" (kshaya), sometimes it covers two sunrises (vriddhi).

Tithis are grouped into five types that repeat: Nanda (1, 6, 11), Bhadra (2, 7, 12), Jaya (3, 8, 13), Rikta (4, 9, 14) and Purna (5, 10, 15). Rikta tithis are avoided for new starts.
