What is choghadiya?

Choghadiya is a simple way to pick a good time within a day. It splits the daytime (sunrise to sunset) into 8 parts and the night (sunset to next sunrise) into 8 more, so you get 16 slots of about an hour and a half each. Each slot gets one of seven names, and each name is either good, neutral or bad. It's very popular in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, and with business families across India, because you can check it in a few seconds before opening a shop, starting a journey or making a payment.

The word itself comes from chau (four) and ghadi (a 24-minute unit). Four ghadis are 96 minutes, which is the length of one slot on a day with 12 hours of daylight.

The seven choghadiyas

NamePlanetQualityGood for
AmritMoonBestAlmost anything, the most liked slot
ShubhJupiterGoodWeddings, puja, learning, ceremonies
LabhMercuryGoodBusiness, trade, starting education
CharVenusNeutralTravel and moving things, also fine for routine work
UdvegSunBadAvoid new starts (some use it for government work)
KaalSaturnBadAvoid new starts (some use it for work that needs hard labour)
RogMarsBadAvoid new starts (some use it for disputes or debate)

How the order works

The day's first choghadiya belongs to the planet that rules the weekday: Sunday starts with Udveg (Sun), Monday with Amrit (Moon), Tuesday with Rog (Mars), Wednesday with Labh (Mercury), Thursday with Shubh (Jupiter), Friday with Char (Venus) and Saturday with Kaal (Saturn). After that it follows a fixed cycle. The night has its own starting point and cycle. You don't need to memorise any of this, the table above is built from these rules for the city and date you pick.

Because the slots come from real sunrise and sunset, they change length through the year. In Delhi in December a day slot is under 80 minutes, in June it's over 100. A fixed choghadiya chart with "6 AM to 7:30 AM" is only an estimate.

How to use choghadiya

  • Find the next Amrit, Shubh or Labh slot and start your work inside it.
  • For travel, Char is also fine.
  • Check that the slot doesn't overlap Rahu kaal. Many families skip a good choghadiya if Rahu kaal falls inside it.
  • For big events like a wedding or a house warming, choghadiya alone is not enough. Use a full muhurat that also checks tithi and nakshatra.

Choghadiya vs hora

Both split the day into planetary slots, but they work differently. Hora gives 24 slots of about an hour, each ruled by one planet in the Chaldean order. Choghadiya gives 16 slots with good/bad names. Traders usually go with choghadiya, while many people use hora to match a task with a planet (Venus hora for buying clothes, Mercury hora for paperwork and so on).

Day and night choghadiya

Night choghadiya matters for things like late travel, night weddings or online launches that go live after sunset. The night list is shown under the day list. The night runs until the next morning's sunrise, so a slot at 2 AM still belongs to the previous date's choghadiya.

Choghadiya tells you a good hour for everyone. If you want timing that fits your own chart, for example the best month for a job change or a marriage, ask Mygrah's AI about your kundli.

Frequently asked questions

Which choghadiya is best?+

Amrit is the best, then Shubh and Labh. Char is neutral and good for travel. Udveg, Kaal and Rog are avoided for new starts.

How long is one choghadiya?+

One eighth of the day or night. With 12 hours of daylight that's 90 minutes, but it changes with the season.

Is choghadiya the same as muhurat?+

It's a quick daily muhurat. For big events like a wedding, a full muhurat that also checks tithi, nakshatra and more is better.

Can a good choghadiya overlap with Rahu kaal?+

Yes, it happens often. Many families skip the overlapping part. This page marks Rahu kaal so you can see it.

When does night choghadiya end?+

At the next sunrise. A slot at 3 AM is part of the previous date's night choghadiya.

Does choghadiya change by city?+

Yes. It's based on local sunrise and sunset, so the slot times differ from city to city.
