What is Rahu kaal?

Rahu kaal (also written Rahu kalam or Rahukaal) is a daily slot of roughly 90 minutes that is linked to Rahu, the north node of the Moon. In Vedic astrology Rahu is a shadow planet that brings confusion and delays, so the custom is simple: don't start anything important during Rahu kaal. Ongoing work is fine. It's the start that people try to keep out of it.

The idea is especially strong in South India, where you'll see Rahu kalam printed on every calendar and even on temple boards. In the north it's checked mostly before travel, signing papers, a puja or buying something big.

How Rahu kaal is calculated

Take the time from sunrise to sunset and split it into 8 equal parts. One of those parts is Rahu kaal, and which one depends on the weekday:

DayRahu kaal partYamaganda partGulika part
Sunday8th5th7th
Monday2nd4th6th
Tuesday7th3rd5th
Wednesday5th2nd4th
Thursday6th1st3rd
Friday4th7th2nd
Saturday3rd6th1st

So on a Monday with sunrise at 6:00 and sunset at 18:00, each part is 90 minutes and Rahu kaal is the second part, 7:30 to 9:00. In winter the day is shorter and the slot shrinks, in summer it gets longer. That is why a fixed "7:30 to 9:00 every Monday" chart is only right on days near the equinox. The times on this page come from the real sunrise and sunset of your city.

Yamaganda and Gulika kaal

The same 8-part split gives two more slots. Yamaganda (Yamagandam) is ruled by Yama and is treated a lot like Rahu kaal, as a time to avoid for new work. Gulika (Gulikai, the son of Saturn) is a bit different. Many people avoid it for good events, but some traditions say whatever you start in Gulika tends to repeat, so it's avoided for things like funerals and debt, and some even use it for buying property or repaying a loan.

What to avoid in Rahu kaal

  • Starting a new business, shop opening or launch
  • Signing a contract, buying a house, vehicle or gold
  • Starting a journey (if you can't move the trip, many people leave a little before or after)
  • Engagement, wedding rituals, griha pravesh
  • Job interviews or sending an important proposal, if you have a choice

What is fine in Rahu kaal

  • Routine work and anything you started earlier
  • Prayers to Rahu or Durga, many temples hold Rahu kaal pujas
  • Rest, study and normal daily tasks

Rahu kaal vs Abhijit muhurat

On some days Rahu kaal falls right on top of Abhijit muhurat, the strong window around noon. Wednesday is the common case. When that happens, most people skip Abhijit for that day and pick a good choghadiya instead. This page shows both so you can see the overlap at a glance.

Is Rahu kaal the same everywhere?

No. It depends on your city's sunrise and sunset, so Chennai and Delhi can differ by 20 minutes or more on the same day, and cities abroad differ a lot. Pick your city above. If you travel often, save the page with your city and it will open with it next time.

Rahu kaal is a general rule for everyone. If you want to know how Rahu works in your own kundli, which house it sits in and what its dasha means for you, ask Mygrah's AI. It reads your chart, not just the clock.

Frequently asked questions

What time is Rahu kaal today?+

It's shown at the top of this page for the city you picked. It changes every day because it's based on that day's sunrise and sunset.

How long is Rahu kaal?+

One eighth of the daytime. On a 12 hour day that's 90 minutes. In winter it can be under 80 minutes and in summer over 100.

Is Rahu kaal at night too?+

The common rule only marks Rahu kaal in daytime. Some traditions also mark a night slot, but most panchangs and temples only use the day one.

Can I travel during Rahu kaal?+

Many people avoid starting a journey in it. If you can't change the time, people usually step out a little before it starts or wait until it ends.

What is the difference between Rahu kaal and Gulika kaal?+

Both are one eighth of the day. Rahu kaal is avoided for new starts. Gulika is avoided for good events too, but some traditions say work started in Gulika repeats, so it's used for things you want more of.

Why is Rahu kaal different in Chennai and Delhi?+

Sunrise and sunset are different. Rahu kaal is a fixed part of the daytime, so when the day starts and ends at different clock times, the slot moves too.
