What is a three card tarot reading?

The three card spread is the most popular tarot layout in the world, and for good reason. It's short enough to read in a few minutes, but it tells a small story. The first card is the past, the second is the present and the third is the likely direction if nothing changes. Together they show how a situation has moved and where it's going.

The three positions

1. Past

The first card shows what shaped the situation. It might be an event, a habit or a feeling you carried in. It's often something you already know, and that's fine. It confirms the reading is talking about the right thing.

2. Present

The middle card is the heart of the reading. It shows the energy around you right now, including things you might not be admitting. If this card is a Major Arcana card, the present moment is a big one.

3. Future

The last card is the likely outcome if things keep going the way they are. It isn't fixed. If you don't like it, the first two cards usually show what you could change. That's the useful part of a three card reading: it shows a direction, not a verdict.

Reading the cards together

Single meanings are a start, but the real reading happens when you look at all three cards side by side. Some simple things to check:

• How many Major Arcana cards? Two or three Majors means a bigger life theme. None means it's about everyday choices.
• Which suit shows up most? Lots of Cups means feelings lead the situation. Lots of Swords means thoughts and talks. Wands bring energy and drive. Pentacles bring money, work and practical stuff.
• Reversed cards. They point to the parts that are blocked or slow. Those are usually where your effort will help most.
• The flow. Does the story go from hard to easier, or the other way? The Five of Cups in the past and the Six of Swords in the present, for example, says you're already moving on.

Good questions for a three card spread

This spread works for nearly anything: a job situation, a friendship, a decision, a goal. Open questions work better than yes or no ones. Try "What do I need to know about my job search?" or "Where is my relationship with my sister heading?". If you only want a quick yes or no, the yes or no tarot is better suited.
