What a natal chart shows

A natal chart (birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. In Western astrology it uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons: Aries always starts at the spring equinox. The chart shows where the Sun, Moon and planets were in the 12 signs, how they divide across the 12 houses, and the angles (aspects) between them.

The Big Three

Your Sun sign is your core personality, your Moon sign is your emotional side, and your Rising sign (Ascendant) is how you come across to others. The Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, which is why the birth time matters so much.

Houses and aspects

Houses show which part of life each planet works in: money, home, love, career and so on. We use the Placidus system, the most common one in Western astrology, and switch to Porphyry at very high latitudes where Placidus breaks down. Aspects are angles between planets. Trines and sextiles flow easily, squares and oppositions create tension that pushes growth, and conjunctions fuse two energies together.

Western vs Vedic

Vedic (Indian) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is currently about 24 degrees behind the tropical one, and it uses whole-sign houses and the Moon's nakshatra. That's why your Vedic sign is often one sign earlier. Both systems are worth a look. You can see your free Vedic kundli too.

Questions people ask

Do I need my exact birth time?+

For the Rising sign and houses, yes. Without a time you'll still get all planet signs and aspects (the Moon may be off near a sign change).

Which house system do you use?+

Placidus. Above about 66 degrees latitude we use Porphyry because Placidus can't be calculated there.

Why is my sign different in Vedic astrology?+

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24 degrees behind the tropical one. So many people are one sign earlier in Vedic charts.

How accurate are the positions?+

Planet positions come from a professional astronomy library and are accurate to well under a degree.

What is the North Node?+

The point where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path. Western astrology reads it as your growth direction. In Vedic astrology it's Rahu.

Can I share my chart?+

Yes. Every chart gets a link that shows the chart and Big Three without your birth time or place.
