How chara karakas work
In Jaimini astrology the planets take on roles based on how far each one has travelled inside its sign, not on which sign it's in. The planet with the highest degree becomes the Atmakaraka, the king of the chart. The one with the lowest becomes the Darakaraka, the significator of your spouse.
- 7 karaka scheme: Sun to Saturn. Atmakaraka, Amatyakaraka, Bhratrikaraka, Matrikaraka, Putrakaraka, Gnatikaraka, Darakaraka.
- 8 karaka scheme: adds Rahu (counted backwards, 30° minus its degree) and a Pitrikaraka for the father. BPHS describes both; many people use 7 for the Darakaraka and 8 for timing work.
The Atmakaraka shows the soul's main lesson in this life. Its navamsa sign is called the Karakamsa, which is used to find your Ishta devata. The Darakaraka describes the nature of the person you marry. Planets close in degree can swap roles with a small change in birth time, so check the degrees in the table.
