How we find your Ishta devata
- Find the Atmakaraka: the planet with the highest degree in its sign (7 karaka scheme).
- Find its sign in the navamsa (D9) chart. That sign is the Karakamsa.
- Count to the 12th sign from the Karakamsa in the D9. The 12th is the house of moksha.
- The planet sitting there points to the deity. If no planet is there, the lord of that sign decides.
This follows the Jaimini Upadesa Sutras. The planet-to-deity list we use is the one most followed in practice: Sun Shiva or Surya, Moon Parvati, Mars Kartikeya or Hanuman, Mercury Vishnu, Jupiter Vishnu or Dattatreya, Venus Lakshmi, Saturn Shiva or Hanuman, Rahu Durga, Ketu Ganesha. We also show the Vishnu avatar BPHS links to each planet. The navamsa changes fast, so this needs an accurate birth time.
