What the ruling planets are

In KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) each nakshatra of 13°20' is split into 9 unequal subs, sized by the Vimshottari years (Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, out of 120), starting from the nakshatra's own lord. Every point in the zodiac therefore has a sign lord, a star lord and a sub lord, and the sub is split again into a sub-sub. KP judges mostly by the sub lord.

The ruling planets at any moment are the day lord, the sign, star and sub lords of the rising degree (lagna), and the sign, star and sub lords of the Moon. KP gives the most weight to the lagna star lord, then the lagna sign lord, the Moon star lord, the Moon sign lord and the day lord. Rahu or Ketu join the list when they sit in a sign ruled by a ruling planet. The Vedic day starts at sunrise, so before sunrise the previous weekday's lord is used; sunrise comes from our panchang engine.
