Where the Lo Shu grid comes from
The Lo Shu is a 3x3 magic square from ancient Chinese tradition. The numbers 1 to 9 sit in it so that every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15. Over time it found its way into feng shui and then into numerology, and today it's one of the most searched numerology tools in India. The idea is simple: put the digits of your birth date into the squares and see which areas of life are well stocked and which are empty.
The fixed layout
The grid is always arranged like this, top row first:
| 4 | 9 | 2 |
| 3 | 5 | 7 |
| 8 | 1 | 6 |
Each square belongs to one number, and each number has a theme. 1 is communication and career, 2 is sensitivity, 3 is memory and imagination, 4 is order, 5 is balance at the centre, 6 is home and responsibility, 7 is learning through experience, 8 is wisdom and money handling, 9 is ambition and energy.
How to fill it in
Write your date of birth as DD MM YYYY and drop the zeros. For 14 June 1992 that's 1, 4, 6, 1, 9, 9, 2. Place each digit in its square, repeating it if it appears more than once. So 1 appears twice, 9 twice, and 2, 4 and 6 once each. 3, 5, 7 and 8 are missing.
Many Indian methods also add the Bhagyank (sum of all digits) and the Mulank (birth day reduced). Here the Bhagyank is 1+4+6+1+9+9+2 = 32 → 5, and the Mulank is 1+4 = 5. Adding them fills the centre square with two 5s, which changes the reading quite a bit. Our calculator adds both by default, skips the Mulank when your birth day is a single digit (it's already in the grid), and lets you switch the extras off to see the plain version.
Missing and repeated numbers
Missing numbers point to areas that may need more conscious effort. They're not flaws. Almost everyone born in the 1900s is missing several numbers, and people born after 2000 often have lots of 2s and 0s and few others. A missing 1 can show up as difficulty saying what you feel. A missing 8 can show up as money slipping through your hands. The fix is usually a habit, not a ritual: practise speaking up, keep a simple budget.
Repeated numbers show strong traits. Two 1s often means a good communicator. Three or more of the same number can tip into too much of that quality, like three 9s showing a lot of drive that sometimes turns into impatience.
Planes, or arrows
Lines of three squares are called planes. When all three numbers in a line are present, that plane is "complete" and its quality is strong.
- Mental plane (4-9-2): top row. Planning, intellect.
- Emotional plane (3-5-7): middle row. Feelings and spiritual sense.
- Practical plane (8-1-6): bottom row. Getting real-world things done.
- Thought plane (4-3-8): left column. Ideas.
- Will plane (9-5-1): middle column. Determination.
- Action plane (2-7-6): right column. Turning plans into action.
- 4-5-6 diagonal: often called the success line or Raj Yog.
- 2-5-8 diagonal: linked with property and stable assets.
An empty plane (none of its three numbers present) is read as an area to build. For example, an empty practical plane is common in very creative people who need a system to get things finished.
Reading your grid in practice
Start with the centre. A 5 in the middle gives balance, and many plane readings depend on it. Then look at complete planes for your strongest areas, and at missing numbers for one or two things to work on. Don't try to fix everything. Pick the missing number that matches something you already feel in your life and start there.
The Lo Shu grid pairs well with your Mulank and Bhagyank and your mobile number check, since some people choose a phone number that contains their missing digits. If you want the grid read together with your name numbers and personal year, the full numerology report covers all of it in one place.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Lo Shu grid?+
It's a 3x3 magic square from ancient China where every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15. In numerology, the digits of your birth date are placed in it to show strengths and gaps.
Why are some numbers missing in my grid?+
Your birth date simply doesn't contain them. Almost everyone has a few missing numbers. Each one points to an area that may need more conscious effort.
Should I add Mulank and Bhagyank to the grid?+
Many Indian methods do. We add the Bhagyank, and the Mulank when your birth day has two digits (for days 1-9 it's already in the grid). You can turn this off.
What is the Raj Yog in Lo Shu?+
People often call the 4-5-6 diagonal the Raj Yog or success line. If all three are present it's read as a sign of steady rise and recognition.
What does a zero do?+
Zeros have no square in the Lo Shu grid, so they're ignored.
