Why your name has a number

Numerology gives every letter a value from 1 to 9 (or 1 to 8 in the Chaldean system). Add the letters of your name and you get numbers that describe how you express yourself, what you want inside and how people see you at first. Your birth date can't change, but your name is something you use thousands of times a year, so many people feel its vibration is worth checking.

The two systems

Pythagorean numerology lays the alphabet out in order: A, J and S are 1, B, K and T are 2, and so on up to I and R at 9. It's simple and is the default in most Western books and apps.

Chaldean numerology is older and works from sound rather than alphabet order. A, I, J, Q and Y are 1, B, K and R are 2, C, G, L and S are 3, D, M and T are 4, E, H, N and X are 5, U, V and W are 6, O and Z are 7, F and P are 8. No letter gets 9 because 9 is treated as sacred. Indian name correction nearly always uses Chaldean and pays attention to the compound total (like 23 or 41) before reducing it.

The three name numbers

Destiny or expression number

All letters added together. This is the big one. It shows your natural talents and the kind of impact you tend to have. If you only look at one name number, look at this.

Soul urge number

Only the vowels (A, E, I, O, U). It points to what you want deep down, the motivation behind your choices. Two people can have the same job and very different soul urges: one wants security, the other wants freedom.

Personality number

Only the consonants. This is the first impression, the "outer layer" people see before they know you well. A soft soul urge with a strong personality number is common in people who seem tough but are kind once you get close.

A quick worked example

Take the name "ASHA" in Pythagorean. A = 1, S = 1, H = 8, A = 1. Total 11, which is a master number, so the destiny number is 11. Vowels A + A = 2, so soul urge 2. Consonants S + H = 9, so personality 9. In Chaldean the same name gives A 1 + S 3 + H 5 + A 1 = 10, which reduces to 1, with the compound 10 known as the Wheel of Fortune. Same name, two different lenses. That is why the tool lets you switch.

Which name to type

The usual advice is to check the name you actually use. If your passport says one thing but everyone knows you by a short form, check both. For married women who changed their surname, try the current name as well as the birth name. Spaces and punctuation don't count, only letters. We count Y as a consonant every time so results are consistent.

Name numbers and your birth numbers

A name number on its own tells you about the name. The more useful question is whether it gets along with your Mulank and Bhagyank. If your name number's planet is friendly to your birth numbers' planets, the name is said to support you. If it's an enemy, people sometimes make a small spelling change, like adding a letter, so the total lands on a friendly number.
