Mulank and Bhagyank, explained simply

Indian numerology leans on two numbers from your date of birth. The Mulank (also called the radical, root or driver number) comes from the day you were born. The Bhagyank (destiny, fortune or conductor number) comes from the whole date. Together they work a bit like an engine and a steering wheel: Mulank drives your everyday behaviour, Bhagyank points the direction your life tends to take.

How to find your Mulank

Take the day of the month and add its digits until you get one digit. Someone born on the 7th has Mulank 7. Born on the 29th? 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2, so Mulank 2. Mulank never uses the month or year, and it always lands between 1 and 9.

Born onMulankPlanet
1, 10, 19, 281Sun
2, 11, 20, 292Moon
3, 12, 21, 303Jupiter
4, 13, 22, 314Rahu
5, 14, 235Mercury
6, 15, 246Venus
7, 16, 257Ketu
8, 17, 268Saturn
9, 18, 279Mars

How to find your Bhagyank

Write the full date as digits and add them all. For 23 March 1995: 2 + 3 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 5 = 32, then 3 + 2 = 5. Bhagyank is 5. Unlike the Western life path, Bhagyank is always reduced to a single digit, so you won't see 11 or 22 here.

Why the planet matters

Each number from 1 to 9 is tied to one of the nine grahas used in Vedic astrology. That link is what makes Indian numerology feel close to jyotish. The planet colours the number: Mulank 1 people often have the Sun's confidence and need for respect, Mulank 6 people have Venus's love of comfort and beautiful things, Mulank 8 people have Saturn's patience and a habit of working harder than everyone else in the room.

The planets also have natural friendships and enmities. Sun, Moon, Mars and Jupiter form one friendly group. Mercury, Venus and Saturn form another. Rahu is usually read like Saturn and Ketu like Mars. This is how numerology decides which numbers are "friendly" to you, and it's the same logic used for mobile numbers, vehicle numbers and name checks on Mygrah.

Reading Mulank and Bhagyank together

When both numbers are the same, the traits are doubled and usually very visible. When their planets are friends, life tends to feel smooth: the way you act supports where you're going. When they are enemies, for example Mulank 1 (Sun) with Bhagyank 8 (Saturn), people often describe a push and pull. You might want quick recognition while life keeps teaching patience. That's not bad luck. It's a pattern you can work with once you see it.

A common rule of thumb in India is that Mulank shows more strongly in the first half of life, roughly until 35, and Bhagyank takes over after that. Many people notice their priorities shift around then, so it's worth reading both.

Lucky days, colours and dates

Each Mulank has traditional lucky days and colours tied to its planet. Mulank 3 (Jupiter) goes with Thursday and yellow, Mulank 9 (Mars) with Tuesday and red, Mulank 6 (Venus) with Friday and white or pink. People use these for small things: picking a date for an interview, the colour of a shirt on an important day, or the day to start a new habit. They're a gentle nudge, not a rule you must follow.

Where to go next

  • Check your Lo Shu grid to see which numbers are strong or missing in your date.
  • Run your mobile number against your Mulank and Bhagyank.
  • See if your name number is in harmony with both.

Frequently asked questions

What is Mulank?+

Mulank (also called radical or driver number) is your birth day reduced to one digit. Born on the 23rd? 2 + 3 = 5, so your Mulank is 5. It shows how you behave day to day.

What is Bhagyank?+

Bhagyank (destiny or conductor number) is the sum of every digit of your full birth date, reduced to 1-9. It shows the broader direction of your life and how others see your path.

Which is more important, Mulank or Bhagyank?+

Indian numerology usually holds that Mulank matters more until about age 35 and Bhagyank grows stronger after that. Read both together.

What if my Mulank and Bhagyank are the same?+

Then that number's qualities are doubled. You tend to be very clear about who you are, and the planet's traits show strongly.

What does it mean if Mulank and Bhagyank are enemies?+

Their planets don't naturally get along, so you may feel a push and pull between how you act and where life takes you. It's not a bad sign, just something to be aware of.

How do I use my lucky numbers?+

People pick dates for important work, choose mobile or vehicle numbers, or check name spellings with them. Treat it as a gentle guide, not a rule.
